Hey guys! I'm currently writing a paper on why the Porsche 911, or any sports car would be an ideal family car. Please give me more suggestions!
What I have:
-Good public perception of the family
-Good investment
-Versatile vehicle

Learning tool for kids? Teaching them about the cars.

it'll be more fun and engaging, which will cause drivers to pay more attention. If it's a manual, no texting/talking on the phone because you'll be shifting with one hand and steering with the other.

I have to write a paper on a technology I would buy. It's for my "Impact of Technology on Society" course.

Rear engine gives you better traction, sports cars have larger/better brakes, more responsive handling will allow you to avoid hazards more easily.

It will force families to think twice about having more children in a world where so many children go hungry and are without family. In that respect a sports car is the ideal family vehicle.

if i had a vintage porsche and my child spilled something in it, i'd toss them out the window. at speed. and life would be better after that.

Why from the perspective of family?

A few things:
1. A Porsche 911 is not what you're going to want to use. You want to use a sports car that can fit 4 people and is long enough to carry a decent amount of cargo. A Mustang GT, Jaguar XK, or other FR sports coupes are much better choices.
2. A new 911 is not a good investment. It never is . You have to limit yourself to mid-80s porsches and back it up with sales prices, or pick a different car that will appreciate.
3. Your best argument for public perception is to compare it with other things people spend on appearances, and compare the results. This is, obviously, not very academic/empirical if you don't have survey/research data.

Oh, and given what I posted in my other comment, it would be MUCH easier to argue that a used luxury car is much better than a new economy car for a family.

I'm all over this. I could write your paper for you; growing up in a 911 for the last 18 years. It's what got me into cars, it's where I learned about vintage cars, where I spent the best times with my parents. It's where my greatest memories come from. I went to preschool in the 911, I went to the local swim club in the 911. I went to get dinner in the 911. I went to play tennis in the 911. It's a time capsule of my families history from when the car was bought until now, and we're still making and putting memories into it. After 40 years in my family, it has transcended being a car or an inanimate object; it is apart of my family, another family member akin to a cat or a dog. We take care of it and treat it like a family member as best as we can and in return, it gives us many smiles over the miles and beyond the times.
It's as versatile as a sports car can get, being able to fit small children in the rear thanks to it's 2+2 seating and it has a big enough trunk space for a small family trip and it's quite economical on the gas too; unlike a 5.0 Mustang. It is a sports car you can use to go get groceries, pick up the kids at school or go on a date; it can do just about anything you need.
The reason we've kept on to our '74 so long is not only for the memories, but for the investment; 911s being a very popular car and all. It does depend on the year though, whether or not your investment will be worth something in the end.
I hope that answers some of your questions, don't hesitate to ask anything else from me; I'm always happy and gearing to help anyone with their Porsche 911 needs! :)

Thank you! How did your parents feel about using a child's seat? Was it a pain each time to use it? Did you use one?

I used it couple times. But when my mother wasn't with me and my dad(She's not a fan of low sitting cars), I sat in the front seat; without the child's seat. :)
It's not that much different from getting in the back seat of a Mustang; you fold the front seat on either side down and climb into the back. Now, adults can't fit back there unless it's just a very short drive, but kids have no problems back there. And the childs seat fit decently back there from my memory. I imagine it's a pain to use any child seat anyway.
This is what the rear seats in a 911 of that vintage would look like. Also, the rear seats can be folded down to create a "cabinet" or "bench" to increase storage space and practicality.

Because it's not the first choice of family transportation. Sports cars are seen as being good at the track, but it's a different story when it comes to everyday use.

"any sports car" is a bit of a stretch... A 2 seater, no matter how you put it, is never gonna be a good family car as it can't seat the damn kids.
A 911 though is ok and lots of people with kids actually use them as daily drivers... Baby seats fit very well in the rear...
It even can fit some stroller in the trunk...

What exactly in a Porsche interior is so delicate it can't take a spill from a juice box? It won't hurt the leather, plastic, or carpeting any more than it would in a Caravan. Porsches are made of high-quality materials, and when they got the rust under control, they became nearly impervious to the elements. Most 30-year-old versions sport shiny original paint.
That's the point of Porsches over other exotics (though those cars are similar in that their interior materials are nothing special). They can perform with the best of them but are sufficiently practical to use every day. It's no coincidence most 911 Carreras or SC's you find in the used listings have six-figure mileages.

Unless your "family" is just you and a significant other, I think I disagree with your thesis...Especially curious about the "versatile" part.
Don't let me stop you though! Write that paper and post it!

Less seats means you have to shuttle people over multiple trips, so more time spent behind the wheel.

Translation: (pretty crap but the best I could do)
You can breakfast longer.
You'll be back for dinner earlier.
Is there a better family car?
